I am pregnant - When should I have my first visit? Your first OB visit is generally between 8-10 weeks of gestation if you are having no complications. If you are unsure of your last menstrual period or have a history of miscarriage we would like to see you earlier for a pregnancy confirmation visit. Through which hospital does your practice deliver? - We deliver predominantly at William Beaumont Hospital, Troy. Patients with complications or before 33 weeks are co-managed at Royal Oak Beaumont through a partnership with Hospital Based and High Risk Maternal Fetal Medicine Doctors. Are antidepressants safe in pregnancy? - Taking antidepressants during pregnancy may pose risks for your baby-but stopping may pose risks for you. Click here for an excellent discussion about this on The Mayo clinic web-site.

When should I start prenatal vitamins? - You should start taking prenatal vitamins as soon as you begin trying to conceive. Your prenatal vitamin should have a minimum 400 mcg (.4mg) of folic acid. People with a family history of spina bifida should take 4000 mcg (4 mg) of folic acid. Prenatal vitamins with Omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA have been linked to improved mental development in babies. Click here for more information.

May I travel long distances during pregnancy? - Travel until 34 weeks of uncomplicated pregnancies is fine. You should stop every one to two hours and walk ten minutes to improve circulation. Travel up to one hour away is generally fine up to 36 weeks. If you go out of town, we recommend bringing a copy of your prenatal records with you.

Are there any guidelines for flying during pregnancy? - Airplane travel during pregnancy is fine up to 34 weeks with uncomplicated pregnancies. Airplane travel can be dehydrating so remember to drink plenty of water. We are happy to provide a note for you to carry stating your gestational age.

May I have my hair colored or dyed? - Yes, throughout the entire pregnancy

How about coffee, tea or caffeinated drinks? - We recommend no more than the equivalent of two cups of coffee per day.

May I go to the dentist while pregnant? - Yes, A  routine dental care is recommended during pregnancy this includes cleaning and fillings.A  We only ask that your dentist use local anesthetic and cover the abdominal area during all x-rays. No nitrous oxide may be used.

May I exercise during my pregnancy? - This is something we really encourage. We recommend keeping your pulse in the 130's for thirty minutes, three times per week. Stop if you are feeling any chest pain, shortness of breath or dizziness. Click here to learn how to check your pulse. Is alcohol safe? - No safe level of alcohol consumption has been documented. We strongly discourage any alcohol use in pregnancy.

May I go swimming? - Yes, swimming during pregnancy is fine but hot tubs or Jacuzzis are strictly prohibited.
