Midwife Monday: Sarah Feierabend, DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice), CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife)

February 10, 2014

, Midwife Monday: Sarah Feierabend, DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice), CNM (Certified Nurse Midwife), Oakland Macomb OBGYNQ: Why are you a midwife? What made you choose this profession?

A: I chose the profession of midwifery after seeing a midwife at work during one of my last nursing school rotations. I was riveted by how the midwife was present with the woman during her whole labor and supported her, coached her, and assisted her through the process. Also, it was an unmedicated birth and the woman labored so well in the tub, so in control. As soon as the baby was born, the women just glowed with happiness and pride for powerfully and peacefully birthing her child.

Q: What’s your best moment as a midwife?

A: My favorite moments as a midwife are at each and every birth. I love to see the excitement and reward surrounding the birth of the baby after the hard work of the labor. The faces of the people going through the birth process are priceless and you know it is an experience that they will never forget.

Q: Why would you tell someone to choose a midwife?

A: A midwife is a good fit for someone who wants to be involved in the decision-making regarding their health. Midwives are great for people who feel that the more information they have, the better off they will be. A midwife is a good fit for people who want a provider who will take the time to listen to their concerns and answer their questions.

Q: What don’t people know about midwives?

A: One of our goals as midwives is to educate you on all of the options you have regarding your health and then support you in your decision. We respect women as competent decision makers who are capable of making their own choices.

Q: What’s something about midwives that surprises people?

A: All of the midwives at Oakland Macomb OB/GYN are Certified Nurse Midwives. This means all of the midwives have received their Bachelor’s of Science in nursing and then either a master’s or doctorate in midwifery. A lot of people that I meet outside of the office do not know that 90% of midwife births take place in the hosptial. Many people still think that midwives do only home births, but that is not the case. Also, though midwives specialize in supporting unmedicated births, epidurals are an option that many of our patients choose. When seeing a midwife you have all of the same pain control options that you would with an MD delivery.
