A Mid-Wife for South Sudan
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” -Chinese Proverb
Oakland Macomb OB-GYN is proud of our Midwives and we believe having them as part of our staff, working side by side with our doctors, makes us special. We know the powerful connection Midwives make with their patients. It is because we know how wonderful a Midwife can be that we caught the attention of Sr. Joan Mumaw who’s raising money to train a Midwife in South Sudan.
Imagine living somewhere without hospitals or doctors. This is South Sudan. So imagine, as Sr. Joan imagines, the benefits a trained Midewife would bring to a village or community.
And when Sr. Joan explained what she was doing to Kathy Figurski, one of our Midwives, Kathy asked what we could do to help raise money – there is considerable cost associated with training and certifying a Midwife overseas.
Kathy Figurski decided to have a Lunch n’ Learn at our offices, and to ask for donations, and Lenny (our computer guy) said if enough money was raised, he’d shave his beard. We’re happy to report, today (not pictured), he’s beardless. Hooray.
We were so proud to be a part of this effort and feel humbled by the inspiration behind the process and by all the people who helped, donated, and made it possible.
Please contact our offices if you would like help.
Sr. Joan Mumaw, during our Lunch n’ Learn, explained why having a Midwife in South Sudan would be such a gift.
