What Are Botox Injections?
Botox was the first company to create and distribute an injectable form of the toxin Clostridium botulinum, and it remains the most popular brand to offer this product on the market. The procedure itself is non-invasive and takes just a few minutes.
Botox and its competitors aim to reduce face wrinkles that appear with age by paralyzing muscles beneath the skin so they cannot contract. This action causes wrinkles to soften and disappear.
Though most people refer to any botulinum injections as “Botox”, there are actually 4 major brands on the market. All of the products use the same neurotoxin to reduce wrinkles and they last the same amount of time. In fact, most patients will never know the difference between brands, but they do exist. Different proteins and dosages used with the botulinum produce slightly different results that may only be noticeable if you have used more than one type. Generally speaking, the brand of injection you receive will depend on the practitioner you choose. Receiving Botox injections in a medical office is safe and reliable.
Botox is most commonly used to treat wrinkles that are formed from repeated facial expressions like smiles and frowns, but the injections also have an effect on other health conditions. Physicians and other qualified providers may use Botox to treat migraines, severe underarm sweating, overactive bladder, certain types of muscle spasms, and uncontrollable blinking. Ask your doctor if Botox could help relieve some of your symptoms.
As mentioned above, the cost of Botox injections will depend on the brand your provider uses. In general, Botox injections use about 40 to 60 units of Botox per site, at a cost of $15-$25 per unit. This leaves the cost of each treatment at $400-$600. Cosmetic Botox injections are not generally covered by insurance, though your provider may be able to help you find a payment plan to make treatment more accessible.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Results of Botox injections will vary from individual to individual and are dependent on the brand and dosage used, but most cosmetic Botox treatments last from 3 to 6 months. When the effects of the injection begin to wear off, you will need to return to your provider for another treatment.
What To Expect
Botox is a routine and noninvasive procedure that generally carries low risk though there are minimal rare side effects to look out for. Because it is an injection, some patients may experience bruising around the site that will subside within a few days. Migraines and temporary eyebrow or eyelid drooping may also occur in the first few weeks, but these occurrences are usually quite mild. You will begin to see results from your cosmetic Botox injection within 3 to 5 days, and the effects will continue to become more obvious over the course of 2 weeks. Though most patients can resume regular activities immediately following injections, it is best to avoid heavy workouts for the first 24 hours after the procedure.
