Sharon R. Helmer

Dr. Sharon R. Helmer  joins us as the Medical Director and Radiologist for our new Oakland Macomb Breast Center. Dr. Helmer offers personal, hands-on care, with 30 years of experience in breast imaging. Dr. Helmer was born and raised in Michigan, growing up in a small town on a farm before attending University of Michigan for her undergraduate degree and Wayne State University for medical school. She then completed her Diagnostic Radiology Residency at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center, and she is board certified by the American Board of Radiology. She served as Section Chief of Ultrasound and Women’s Imaging at the VA Medical Center in Detroit prior to joining us, and before that, was the Clinical Service Chief Imaging Department and Director of the Breast Imaging Program at Karmanos Cancer Center for many years. She has also served as the Director of both the Mammography Division and Radiology Resident Program at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center. Over her impressive career, Dr. Helmer has received many awards and accolades, including the Karmanos Cancer Institute Heroes of Breast Cancer Compassionate Caregiver Award in 2013. Her family includes two daughters and a son, and two grandsons. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family, and photography. Dr. Helmer is passionate about breast screening exams and feels strongly that mammography saves lives. The Oakland Macomb Breast Center, and Dr. Helmer, can be found in the private comfort of Suite 350 in our Rochester Hills office. We provide everything from screening mammography to diagnostic procedures, all done with our state of the art Genius 3D mammography and ultrasound, and includes cyst aspirations, and stereotactic technology.
