Office Procedures Q & A

What are office procedures?

Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., gives new meaning to the concept of comprehensive care. The providers give you the convenience of a one-stop-shop by providing the full scope of medical care, advanced diagnostic imaging, and gynecological procedures -- all in one location.

Beyond convenience, office procedures offer other advantages. In the relaxing atmosphere of the office, you receive personal attention from providers who know you and care about your health. You can’t get that level of care at a hospital.

What office procedures do I need for abnormal Pap test management?

Pap tests screen for cervical cancer. When you get a Pap test, your provider removes a sample of cells from the surface of your cervix. The sample goes to a lab, where they examine the cells to see if they’re normal, precancerous, or cancerous.

When your Pap results show moderate to severe cellular changes, you may need two office procedures:

Colposcopy

Your provider uses a device called a colposcope to get a magnified view of your cervix. If they see abnormal tissues, they remove them using a loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP).

LEEP

LEEP uses a thin wire loop to cut away the suspicious tissues on your cervix. The biopsy then goes to the lab, where specialists determine if the tissues are malignant and, if so, whether the biopsy removed all the cancerous cells.

If your biopsy shows that you have cervical cancer, gynecological oncology specialists at Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., meet with you to determine your cancer treatment.

What type of office procedure is endometrial ablation?

Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive procedure to stop abnormal vaginal bleeding. Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., uses Minerva®, an advanced device that uses gentle radiofrequency (RF) energy to remove the endometrial tissue lining your uterus.

Your provider inserts a specially designed wand through your cervix and into the uterus. The wand uses a triangular mesh to quickly send RF energy into the tissues.

Your endometrial ablation only lasts four minutes. In that time, the RF heat destroys the lining, which in turn stops the bleeding.

What other office procedures might I receive?

These are a few of the procedures most frequently done in the office at Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C.:

  • Dilation and curettage (D&C), to remove tissues inside your uterus using a curette

  • Hysteroscopy myomectomy, to remove uterine fibroids

  • Polypectomy, to remove uterine polyps

Your provider may also do a hysteroscopy to examine your uterus, diagnose, and treat several problems.
