What is radiology?
Radiology is a medical specialty that uses imaging techniques to diagnose and treat diseases. Most people associate radiology with getting an X-ray, but that’s only one type of imaging that falls under the radiology umbrella. Radiology also includes ultrasound and other techniques such as MRIs, PET scans, and CT scans.
Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., offers on-site radiology services so that women can receive comprehensive care in one location.
You can get a breast exam, followed by a mammogram and breast ultrasound if needed, and then talk with your provider about the results in the course of one office visit.
What does it mean to offer accredited radiology services (ACR)?
ACR accreditation is the gold standard for imaging. It means that the ACR regularly evaluates the radiology services at Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C.
After its review, the ACR only offers accreditation when the practice meets high standards. Accreditation verifies that Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., provides the highest level of image quality and safety, and that the staff is exceptionally qualified.
The practice holds ACR accreditation in mammography, ultrasound, and stereotactic breast biopsies.
Can I get a mammogram through on-site radiology?
Mammograms produce images of the tissues inside your breasts using low-dose X-rays. Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., offers two types of mammography, screening and diagnostic mammograms.
Screening mammograms
Screening mammograms are for when you don’t have any signs of breast cancer. The purpose is to catch breast cancer at an early stage, before symptoms develop, and while the disease is curable. Beginning at the age of 40, all women should schedule regular screening mammograms.
Diagnostic mammograms
Your mammogram is diagnostic when you have it after breast cancer symptoms appear. With on-site radiology, your provider can perform a breast exam to confirm your symptoms and then immediately send you to the on-site imaging center for a mammogram.
The practice does both types of mammograms using Genius™ 3D Mammography™. This advanced technology creates three-dimensional images that show more details with outstanding accuracy.
What types of ultrasound are available through on-site radiology?
Like all OB/GYN practices, Oakland Macomb Obstetrics & Gynecology, P.C., does routine ultrasounds when women are pregnant. The providers also use ultrasound to diagnose many gynecologic conditions.
The ultrasound at the breast cancer imaging center works the same way — using sound waves to create detailed images — but it’s different because it’s only used after you have a mammogram that reveals a mass in your breast.
The practice offers:
Diagnostic breast ultrasound
Using a handheld ultrasound device placed against your breast, your provider directs the sound waves to the location of the mass. The image provides detailed information about the mass, such as its size and whether it’s a solid mass or a cyst. Then your provider can recommend the next step in your care, such as a biopsy.
Whole breast ultrasound
Whole breast ultrasound uses a larger ultrasound device that completely covers one breast and creates an image of the entire breast. This ultrasound technique is often needed for women with dense breast tissue.
